How to find fitness time while juggling work and being a mum

Written by guest Blogger Jo Wynn.

Being the type of person that likes to try and keep fit and healthy, as well as work a full time job and being a mum (and dog owner!), means things can get pretty ‘full on’ trying to fit everything in sometimes.

I hear so many people say “oh I would love to try that class but don’t know when I have time” or “oh I feel really guilty if I go to a class in the evening as I don’t see enough of my partner or children.” I too fall into that category but have learnt that if you take care of yourself and make time for the things that make you feel good ultimately it will help you work smarter, be a better mum and partner – knowing that you are taking time out for yourself. I believe that, in this busy world we live in, it is even more important than ever to take time out for yourself to stay fit, have fun, laugh more and generally make sure you are looking after yourself. I don’t feel this is a selfish act but more of a commitment to being the best ‘you’ that you can be.

How do you do that in a busy world? Well I am lucky that I have an understanding partner who loves to surf and has recently taken up to going to the gym so we make sure we put aside time each week that we know is our own time to do those things and stick to it, as well of course making time for the family which is equally as important. If you commit and stick to your regime you will also see improvements from regular visits.

I started Bodyballet about a year ago with Lisa at MBD as I wanted to try something different. I was attending a Yoga class which was great and more recently also joined a gym but felt I needed something else to add to my routine. I am not a dancer and have never done ballet in my life and at 45-years-old new things can feel a little daunting – especially those that you don’t know what to expect. However, having attended Lisa’s class, I can honestly say she completely makes everyone feels at ease, really knows her stuff and most importantly is great fun. The class was definitely challenging, using muscles that you don’t usually use, but after going to a few and now a year on I can really see how i’ve progressed. Although Lisa does change the classes after a few weeks so they also stay really fresh and never dull, my fitness levels and core strength have definitely improved.

I love progressing with my fitness and doing things that I didn’t know I could do – it gives me a real sense of achievement. You really CAN fit everything in if you stick to it and make it a new habit. When it comes to your health, I whole heartedly believe you should invest as much time as you can as you are only here once.

So, I say go out there, dance, move, have fun and be the best you that you can be (of course there is always room for more improvement!)
