Why Strengthening Your Pelvic Floor Is So Important

“Engage your pelvic floor!” Those of you who attend my classes will no doubt think I sound like a broken record as I must repeat this 20 times in any one class. It’s the first thing I get everyone to do in my adult classes, whether it’s a ballet, commercial, or cardio dance class, we stand with good posture and contract our pelvic floor.  WHAT is our pelvic floor and WHY is it so important to strengthen and tone it? Read on:

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles and connective tissues that attaches the pubic bone to the tailbone. A lovely hammock of strength underneath your bladder, uterus and bowel. It’s a pretty important piece of kit… particularly in women. These are just a few reasons to exercise your pelvic floor:

It’s essential for good posture
The PF supports your spine and stabilises your core. For a stronger and flatter tummy you need to work from the inside out so your absolute starting point should be your PF.

It will improve your bladder and bowel control
It’s the contact and release that allows/prevents you from having a wee!

It will improve your sex life
No joke, it has been proven to increase physical intensity during action.

It will relieve back pain and help prevent back injuries
When your core is weak, other muscles in your back will over compensate = pain and injury.

It’s essential pre and post birth
Regular PF exercise improves blood circulation to the perineum and vagina which speeds up healing and assists in pregnancy and birth.

If you’re not sure you’re engaging or contacting your pelvic floor in the correct way in class, or if you’d like some exercises to do at home to help strengthen then please grab me at the end of class for a chat. Always happy to chat PF!
